After Wisdom Teeth Removal
Third-molar surgery recovers well when the first three days are handled right — here’s the playbook.

Days 1–3: The Critical Window
- Expect swelling to peak around day 2–3 — cold compresses the first day, then warm compresses after 48 hours help it resolve.
- Bite on gauze until oozing stops; replace as directed.
- Take medication on schedule rather than chasing pain after it starts.
- Rest with your head elevated; no exercise until at least day three.
The Non-Negotiables
- No straws, no smoking or vaping, no forceful spitting for 72+ hours — dry socket after wisdom-tooth extraction is genuinely miserable and almost always preventable.
- Don’t probe the sockets with your tongue or fingers.
- Start gentle salt-water rinses after 24 hours, especially after eating.
- If you were given an irrigation syringe for lower sockets, begin using it only when instructed (usually day 5+).
Eating
- First day: cool and soft — smoothies by spoon, yogurt, lukewarm soup, mashed potatoes.
- Days 2–5: soft foods that don’t require real chewing; avoid rice, seeds, and chips that lodge in sockets.
- Normal diet returns gradually over 1–2 weeks as comfort allows.
Call Us If
- Numbness in lip, chin, or tongue persists beyond the anesthetic wearing off.
- Throbbing pain intensifies day 3–5 (dry socket) — we can dress the site and relieve it quickly.
- Fever or spreading swelling develops, or you’re simply worried — call, that’s what we’re here for.
